“Racks” is a digital archive of abandoned and dismantled bicycles on the streets of four London boroughs. All of them once belonged to someone, sometimes for years. Some still carry stickers and traces of former ownership. But after being scavenged for parts by thieves, they have been neglected and continue to linger on the streets, tied to racks, slowly being dismantled further.
The council cannot remove them because they are still considered private property, yet they no longer have a clear owner. These bicycles exist in a kind of limbo state, neither fully “alive” nor “dead.”
The project documents them—their real-time location, condition, and presence—along with videos capturing their ongoing agony in the city’s urban environment.
